Brief Note 002-15 A second round of electoral farce

UNDERSTANDING GUATEMALA
PERSPECTIVES FROM THE GUATEMALA PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT NETWORK (gpdn/rpdg) AND THE MOVEMENT FOR PROGRESSIVE AND POPULAR UNITY (MUPP)
Brief Note 002-15
A second round of electoral farce

Twelve days after the first round of elections on September 6th Guatemalans do not have yet a reliable report on how people really voted. However, Manuel Baldizón, who was the leading candidate two months ago but vetoed by the U.S. Embassy and the private sector, has already withdrawn from the race, and on October 25th, Sandra Torres, former First Lady under Álvaro Colom, will face a newcomer, Jimmy Morales, who is supported by former and current military officers. We continue to sustain that the elections are unconstitutional, illegal, immoral and illegitimate, and even worse, that instead of solving the political crisis they will only aggravate it. The political system will continue immersed in corruption and the government will continue responding to “powerful” sectors and not to the people. More than half the members of Congress were reelected, continuing one of the worst legislative bodies in the last 20 years; and for the rich and “capos” of organized crime it will be “business as usual.”  People must prepare themselves for constant struggles, including preservation of their lives vis-a-vis state and privatized threats and attacks.
