UNDERSTANDING GUATEMALA
PERSPECTIVES FROM THE GUATEMALA PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT
NETWORK (gpdn/rpdg) AND THE MOVEMENT FOR PROGRESSIVE AND POPULAR UNITY (MUPP)
Brief Note 005-15
What will happen on October 25th
for the second round of elections?
According to the
electoral law if no candidate obtains more than 50% of the vote in the first
round of elections for president and vice-president citizens must vote again
in order to decide who of the two leading candidates should win the position.
On October 25th, Jimmy Morales will face Sandra Torres for the
presidency. Taking into account that elections in 11 municipalities have been
annulled because of fraud, citizens of those municipalities will also vote
again for municipal authorities. Jimmy Morales, presidential candidate of Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN,
Front of National Convergence), ended in first place with 23.9 %, and
according to the Tribunal Supremo
Electoral (TSE, Supreme Electoral Tribunal) Sandra Torres, presidential
candidate for Unidad Nacional de la
Esperanza (UNE, National Unity of Hope), ended in second place with 19.8
%. Many citizens know Sandra Torres because as President Álvaro Colom’s wife
she was First Lady from 2008 to 2011; most citizens do
not know who Jimmy Morales is. We will be providing information about both
candidates for the next month, although we believe Guatemala’s political
crisis will continue independently of who wins the elections.
