UNDERSTANDING GUATEMALA
PERSPECTIVES FROM THE GUATEMALA PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT NETWORK (gpdn/rpdg) AND THE MOVEMENT FOR PROGRESSIVE AND POPULAR UNITY (MUPP)

Brief Note 004-15
More repression against indigenous peoples

The National Coordination of Widows of Guatemala (CONAVIGUA) issued a communiqué today denouncing the assassinations of Sebastián Sajic Córdova in El Quiché on September 11th and Rigoberto Lima Choc in El Petén on September 18th, both key players and very active in human rights struggles. In addition, CONAVIGUA denounced a recent break-in of the office of the Mama Maquín Organization for Repatriated Women, which provides support to former refugee women outside Guatemala. Concerned with these criminal acts CONAVIGUA is urging governmental authorities to fully investigate them, a new trend of attacks and harassment against indigenous peoples, and bring to justice and punish those responsible for ordering and carrying out these crimes. The Office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights has also condemned these actions and asked the Government of Guatemala to guarantee the right to life and freedom of association for indigenous peoples.
